When height is part of the problem.

The National Lift Tower is a 127.5-metre structure with multiple floors, four former lift shafts and specialist access systems. That physical environment may be useful to teams developing communications products that cannot be investigated meaningfully at workshop scale.

We welcome early conversations about potential radio, antenna, wireless, IoT and telemetry projects. Each proposal is considered individually to establish whether the tower could provide a suitable, safe and practical environment.

Elevated antenna trials

A customer could propose positioning suitable antenna or radio equipment at an agreed elevation and collecting measurements from selected ground locations.

Point-to-point links

The tower could be considered as one temporary endpoint in a directional or line-of-sight investigation, subject to an agreed second location and verified link geometry.

Vertical signal propagation

Customer equipment placed at approved levels could help investigate signal behaviour across multiple floors or along an enclosed vertical route.

IoT and telemetry gateways

An approved elevated position may support trials involving customer-supplied gateways, remote sensors or monitoring devices in a defined test area.

Inspection-system communications

Teams could explore command, telemetry or video-link behaviour for inspection or remotely operated equipment working over long vertical distances.

Long vertical system runs

The tower may be relevant to temporary cable, feeder, fibre, sensor or control-system installations where length, support and vertical separation matter.

Project responsibilities

Bring the equipment, method and technical brief.

Customers would normally define and supply their communications equipment, antennas, measurement systems, specialist personnel and proposed method. They would also need to identify applicable spectrum licensing, regulatory and RF-safety requirements.

The tower team would assess the requested locations, access, mounting, power, data, operating conditions and interaction with other work at the facility. No frequency, transmitter power, antenna size, range, roof position or line of sight should be assumed before that assessment.

    Define the research question

    Explain the product, the intended outcome and why elevation, distance or a vertical shaft is relevant.

    Describe the proposed setup

    Include equipment dimensions, frequencies, power, preferred positions, mounting, access, measurement and licensing requirements.

    Assess the environment

    We will consider whether a safe, practical setup could be developed within the tower's operational constraints.
